An American Spaniard in France or: How I Learned to Make an Ass of Myself in Three Cultures

Me ‘n’ Scarlett

Despite her total lack of self-awareness and poor romantic choices, Scarlett O’Hara is kind of a hero of mine. She never let the bastards get her down, which is one of the mottos I live by. Dirty Yankees, sex-crazed homeless men, carpetbaggers and white trash like that Emmy Slattery might slow her down, but she always lived to fight another day.

I think of Scarlett often and this week was no exception. While sorting the contents of boxes and planning my next move, I said, “As God is my witness, I’ll live a box-free life someday!”

It’s been six damn years, but I’m getting closer, I can feel it.

In Spanish, Gone With the Wind is called Lo que el viento se llevó [What the Wind Took] which somehow seems more sad. Scarlett totally needed a Sassy Gay Friend.
