Le cul entre les deux chaises

An American Spaniard in France or: How I Learned to Make an Ass of Myself in Three Cultures

In French they say “gruik!”

While buying bread, I spotted this little guy staring at me and had to bring him home too. He didn’t have one of the special French pastry names that I’ve been trying to keep straight, but was just called cochon, French for pig.

He was so cute that I hesitated to cut into him, but when I did, this is what I found.

Turns out that he’s made of incredibly rich fudge on the inside and the outside is almond paste. I was hoping for a light, HoHo-esque cake on the inside covered in some kind of gumpaste or icing. As I’m not at all fond of almond-based stuff, the clever coating was a disappointment. And I love chocolate much more than the average bear, but this was impossible to eat. A group of 40 children would be hard pressed to finish it I think, despite the entire little piggy being only about four inches long.
