An American Spaniard in France or: How I Learned to Make an Ass of Myself in Three Cultures

An “s” makes all the difference

[By the time this post goes up, I will have already seen The Dark Knight Rises, the final chapter in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, on an Imax screen. It wasn’t easy to find a theater that has some showings in VOST (original voice, subtitled), but I did and I’m goin’.]

The tagline on the French poster for TDKR is, “Tout va s’embraser.” I knew right away that I had to look that up since I’d read the tagline in English and I was certain it wasn’t “Everyone is going to make out.” S’embrasser [two “s”s] is to kiss, what we Americans would call French kiss, not the kind you give to your granny. While this may be the promotional angle for the French porn version of TDKR, I knew it couldn’t be right.

Turns out that the English “A fire will rise” became “Everything will be set ablaze/erupt into violence.”

Embraser [one “s”] is to set on fire; “embarrassment,” when one’s cheeks are red like fire, is related to this word. I will not make the same mistake again. If I do, I will be embrase for sure.
