Called the US Embassy in Paris recently and was completely stymied by their phone tree. The message starts off with a standard greeting in English then the same repeated in French. It had been so long since I’d listened to an automatic message in English that I was initially thrown off, but I soldiered on and pressed 1 to continue in English. The next part of the message was this:
For United States citizen emergencies requiring immediate attention, such as death, medical assistance, assault or abduction, please press 9 now.
Basically, if any of the worst things possible happen to you, a loved one or a traveling companion, you have to sit through a bilingual greeting, then press 1, then wait for the long ass laundry list of horrible things, then press 9.
Taken is technically a French movie as it was written, produced and directed by French dudes. The story is by Luc Besson who doesn’t get a lot of respect here in France, partly because he makes blatantly commercial films, but I think he is kind of a genius.
