An American Spaniard in France or: How I Learned to Make an Ass of Myself in Three Cultures

takenCalled the US Embassy in Paris recently and was completely stymied by their phone tree. The message starts off with a standard greeting in English then the same repeated in French. It had been so long since I’d listened to an automatic message in English that I was initially thrown off, but I soldiered on and pressed 1 to continue in English. The next part of the message was this:

For United States citizen emergencies requiring immediate attention, such as death, medical assistance, assault or abduction, please press 9 now.

Basically, if any of the worst things possible happen to you, a loved one or a traveling companion, you have to sit through a bilingual greeting, then press 1, then wait for the long ass laundry list of horrible things, then press 9.

No wonder Liam Neeson took matters into his own hands.

Realize something

Taken is technically a French movie as it was written, produced and directed by French dudes. The story is by Luc Besson who doesn’t get a lot of respect here in France, partly because he makes blatantly commercial films, but I think he is kind of a genius.
